They Call It Love
The project ‘They Call It Love’ by Stéphanie Baechler explores the subtle structures that hold our society together: care, maintenance, and everyday organisation. At its centre is a specially developed work, produced on a computer-controlled circular knitting machine, which is both transparent and elastic, interwoven with symbols and fragments of text. The material unfolds into an installation in which textile and sculpture converge.
For this work, Baechler tested various combinations of recycled polyester monofilament. Two distinct fabrics were developed: one for a tube-like sculpture and one for a large wall hanging. Visibility, tactility, and graphic precision were central considerations, alongside the integration of personal themes such as motherhood and femininity, expressed in a crafted, drawing-like style.
The work was presented in Baechler’s solo exhibition ‘They Call It Love’, from 20 September to 30 November 2025 at Kunstraum Baden, Switzerland.
