Souheila Chalabi
Belleville
With ‘Belleville’, Souheila Chalabi created an embroidered work inspired by her childhood in the Parisian district of Belleville. In the tapestry, she brings together personal and collective memories. Residents contributed objects that symbolise their neighbourhood, which Chalabi incorporated into a woven map of place, identity, and belonging.
The work forms part of Chalabi’s series ‘Les Souvenirs du Bled’, in which she explores her hybrid identity, shaped by Algerian roots, a Parisian upbringing, and intercultural encounters. The piece is further enriched by an audio installation featuring field recordings, family testimonies, and personal memories, creating a multi-sensory experience.
