Sérénade Enchantée: Mélodie du Refuge

For their solo exhibition at Kunsthall Oslo, artist Damien Ajavon developed an impressive tapestry in which identity, memory and community are at the heart of the work. Ajavon weaves together personal archives, including images of their body, family and queerness, into a layered textile composition that functions as a carrier of stories and memories.

In the work, they combine Jacquard-weaving technique with both computer‑controlled and hand embroidery, and they also use passementerie (decorative finishes such as cords and fringes). The result is an expressive piece with depth, shadow, and details that continually reveal themselves. The tapestry is constructed from a wide range of materials, processed in different ways. Some areas are tightly and densely woven, while others are looser and puffier, creating relief. Together, these layers evoke the atmosphere of a mysterious garden: soft, rich, and a little enigmatic.

The work was developed for Kunsthall Oslo and was exhibited from 26 April to 8 June 2025. It is subsequently on view at the TextielMuseum as part of the exhibition ‘Haus of fibre’ from 10 October 2025 until 15 March 2026.

Their work has been purchased by the TextielMuseum and therefore remains in our collection.
