The Room Without Air
‘The Room Without Air’ is Clara Nop’s graduation project, based on her personal archive of dreams. The work consists of a large knitted wall hanging, composed of illustrations from sixteen recurring dreams. The dreamy, sometimes surreal images were originally captured in small watercolours and then translated into textile using a circular knitting machine, creating a tangible, layered landscape.
In the lab, Clara used Jacquard-knitting technique to produce a double-sided fabric in four colours. The greatest challenge was scaling up her delicate paintings (approximately 10 × 10 cm) to a monumental format while preserving gradations, details, and atmosphere.
‘The Room Without Air’ was shown at the Design Academy Eindhoven Graduation Show during Dutch Design Week 2025, from 18 to 26 October. Clara Nop graduated cum laude with this project.
