Christophe Ascençao
EC Knit
‘EC Knit’ is a knitted bed for night trains that is light, ergonomic, and intimate, offering an alternative to conventional sleeping compartments. The project explores the possibilities of 3D knitting using the circular knitting technique. Ascençao used additional filler yarns to provide strength and comfort.
By varying knitting structures and filling, zones of support are created alongside more flexible areas that adapt to the body. Instead of four colours, Ascençao used eight to achieve a richer colour gradient. The knitted surface extends beyond the bed to form panels that absorb sound, filter light, and provide privacy. The system is lightweight, easy to maintain, fully washable, and makes night travel more comfortable and enjoyable.
The project was presented at the ECAL Diploma Exhibition 2025 in June and at ‘Master Pieces’ from 29 November to 4 January 2026 at the TextielMuseum. Ascençao received the Bachelor Award from the Swiss Design Association, and ‘EC Knit’ was also selected for the Pro Helvetia Starting Power Programme.
