Memories of a Garden

Memories of a Garden’ by designer Kiki van Eijk consists of a series of four woven wall hangings, ‘IRIS’, ‘FLAG’, ‘BRIDGE’ and ‘TULIP TREE’ and was developed during an artist-in-residence at Marc Mulders’ mobile garden studio on the Baest Estate. Van Eijk worked in a collage-like manner: line drawings were translated into small textile collages, scanned and enlarged into compositions suitable for weaving.

A key challenge was combining coarse hemp yarns with fine wefts. Van Eijk resolved this by weaving a specially developed yarn on the reverse side, allowing the front to retain a fluid, collage-like effect. The hemp is unbleached and black, of Romanian origin, and retains a raw character. The thicker variant of the yarn enhances the handmade, collage-like quality of the designs.

The works were shown at the Kiki and Joost gallery during Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven 2025, from 18 to 26 October, as part of the exhibition ‘In Action’.
